Requirements

Taking a working holiday in the UK can be a great opportunity to explore a new culture while gaining work experience. However, there are essential requirements you must fulfil. To start with, you need a Tier 5 (Youth Mobility Scheme) visa, which allows you to live and work in the UK for up to 2 years. This visa is available for individuals aged 18-30 from certain countries. An important part of the visa application process is proving that you have sufficient funds (usually around £2530 or more in savings) to support yourself initially. Workers from non-English speaking countries may also have to pass an English language test. Generally, you also need comprehensive healthcare insurance to cover any potential medical costs. It’s worth noting that some jobs may require a UK-based qualification, so consider this if you're planning to work in a specialized field. Knowing and preparing for these requirements will ensure a smooth transition into your working holiday in the UK.

Extra Costs

Planning a working holiday in the UK can be a fun and rewarding experience. However, it's important to consider the possibility of extra costs that can arise during the trip. Apart from the primary expenses like airfare, lodging, travel insurance and visa fees, one can encounter costs such as those related to health care, mobile phone usage, and public transportation. In addition, depending on your lifestyle and the city in which you stay, entertainment and eating out can also add up considerably. Also, remember to allocate funds for necessities like groceries, toiletries, laundry, and any new clothing you might need specific to the UK's weather. Lastly, there may be unexpected expenses for emergencies or spontaneous trips and activities. Knowing these potential extra costs can help you budget your trip more effectively.

This could be you!

Itinerary Teaser

Day 1

Once you have touched down at San Jose Airport, your pre-arranged transfer will take you straight to your initial hostel accommodation in San Ramon.

Day 2

After your night’s stay in San Ramon, you’ll head straight to your volunteer accommodation in the heart of Ostional. Once you’ve arrived, you’ll have an orientation where you’ll meet the on-site project coordinators and the other volunteers and learn about your volunteer duties.

Day 3+

8.00am: Indulge in a fresh Costa Rican breakfast, prepared by your in-house chef and cooks. 9.00am: Your volunteer duties are predominantly in the afternoon and nights as that’s when the turtles and hatchlings are most active. Spend your mornings lazing on tropical beaches, exploring the rainforests and getting to know the friendly locals. 12.00pm: Enjoy a prepared lunch by the in-house chef or opt for a traditional meal at one of the local cafes and restaurants. 1.00pm: Spend the afternoon partaking in important volunteer duties. You could find yourself making information signs, participating in reforestation and environmental awareness education, beach clean-ups/recycling and helping out with general infrastructure maintenance.  5.00pm: Join the other volunteers for dinner and group meetings before you begin your night patrol shift.  8.00pm: Start a 4-hour beach patrol shift, alternating between 8pm-12am and 12am-4am. During your shift, you could be responsible for searching for sea turtle nests, digging up at-risk nests and placing them in a safer man-made nest, guiding mother turtles to shore to lay their precious eggs, monitoring relocated turtle nests and temperatures and taking biometric measurements. If you’re lucky, you may even assist freeing turtle hatchlings and releasing them for their initial journey to the sea! Weekends: You’ll have every weekend off, which gives you the perfect opportunity to explore. Discover the local area, famous for water sports, its beaches and volcanic hikes, or head to Costa Rica’s capital, San José, and spend your time off exploring the museums and bars!

Can I travel with a friend or partner?

Yes you can! Simply tell your Trip Coordinator after booking that your friend is also going and they can link your profiles. For most of our trips we should be able to have you and your friends placed together or nearby. Meaning that you can live, work, play & travel together! But wait there's more! Not only can you travel the world with your besties at your side, you can also earn some extra cash towards your own trip just by referring your friends to Global Work & Travel. Can I bring my pet along?

At Global Work & Travel, we share a deep love for animals and fully understand the special bond you have with your pet. We recognise the challenges of embarking on a trip without them. Due to travel restrictions, requirements, and limited pet-friendly accommodations among our host organisations, we regretfully cannot facilitate their inclusion in the journey. However, many of our customers choose to entrust their pets to a family member or friend, embark on their adventure, and return home to wagging tails and furry cuddles.

What happens if I need to cancel my trip?

We know that life can get in the way of travel, so all our trips come with a great deal of flexibility. In most cases, if you cannot travel on your selected date, you can place your trip on hold to deal with whatever is holding you back, and continue in the future without incurring any penalty. You may also have the option of transferring to an entirely different trip and destination as well, or even transferring your trip to a friend or family member. In the event that you need to outright cancel your trip, if you give us 84* days notice you can do so with only a 50% cancellation fee. Your refund of the balance will come in the form of a Store Credit which you can put toward any other trip that we offer, including tours through third-party providers, as well as holidays through DealsAway.com, and is valid for 2 years from date of issue. As international travel can be complex, your options are based on the progress of your trip organisation and our support team can assist you in finding the best solution for your needs.
